“Freedom from Hunger: An Achievable Goal for the United States of America” has been released and includes recommendations of the national Commission on Hunger to Congress and the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture. This report is the work of a bipartisan commission and is designed to provide recommendations to more effectively use existing programs and funds of the USDA to combat domestic hunger and food insecurity. Our own Billy Shore from Share Our Strength was a member of this committee. The full report can be found here: http://cybercemetery.unt.edu/archive/hungercommission/20151216222336/https://hungercommission.rti.org/Activities/FinalReport
Also important to note(!) is that the USDA recommended the use of our Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics GENIE tool to design effective nutrition education interventions. This tool has been instrumental in providing a framework to effectively design and evaluate our non-SOS programs that are available under the RESOURCES tab on our satellite resource blog. This is a significant step forward as it provides the credibility we deserve by acknowledging that our interventions as thoroughly developed, implemented and evaluated, using evidence based practice. Access to GENIE can be found here: http://genie.webauthor.com/public/partner.cfm?partner_name=GENIE. Consider having volunteers or interns go through GENIE to evaluate your non-SOS programs and determine next steps to make them even better!
